FAQ 25: How do I setup Wireless Access (WiFi) inside our Faculty?
Updated Date: 2009-11-24 08:19:35 Updated By: julian
The following guide will aid in establishing a wireless connection onto our wireless Access Points (AP's) or hotspots located within our Faculty.
** The Faculty Wireless network is called USYD-G04 .
----- S E T U P INSTRUCTIONS -----
((1)) Follow the URL step-through guideline for setting up a connection onto the USYD Campus Wireless Data Network:
www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/internet/setupvpn.shtml
and then click on the SETUP GUIDES link.
* Try to read the other links as well to fully understand the new regulations and charges involved.
** The Faculty of Architecture does NOT support the USYD Campus Wireless Data Network; thus we are unable to provide full technical assistance for it - as all the instructions are already stipulated online. The official technical helpline to call for further aid is 02 9351 6000.
*** Note, the USYD Campus Wireless Data Network is NOT the same as our Architecture Network. Thus, Campus enabled WiFi access is a CHARGED service; it is NOT a free web-access service (for non-USYD websites). The cost charges are by the Megabyte only, not by Time. You can check the latest figures within the SETUP GUIDE link above.
*** You have to use your Unikey Extro Login account to access this Wireless Network. Please read the Setup Guidelines for further details.
*** You CANNOT print to our Faculty Printers from your USYD Campus Wireless connection on your laptop. Please log in to a Lab machine instead to do so.
((2)) Note, the following steps are handy hints I found helpful in completing the final phases, that may not have been emphasized in the present outline of the Official SETUP GUIDE;
(a) You must enable web access on your Unikey account; goto the Manage Account webpage -
http://www.usyd.edu.au/ict/switch/unikey/index.shtml
Then click the link from the right side: "Change Account Options".
Then ensure that "Web Access", as well as "VPN Access", is TICKED.
Then click "Change Options" to save the new preference.
(b) Make sure you have some credit to start off with in your Unikey Account. You may top up your credit on the same Manage Account webpage, via Credit Card.
(c) OSX USERS:: You must use the manual proxy settings for your Web Browser(s). For Apple OSX users, this setting is derived from the:
Apple Menu >> System Preferences >> Network >> Airport >> Configure >> Proxies >> Manually
* Tip - it is best that you create a NEW LOCATION before changing the Proxy Settings; call the location "ARCH-USYD". When you leave the faculty, remember to switch it back to "Automatic" location.
Tick the proxy server boxes [ FTP, HTTP, HTTPS ], and add for each setting the Proxy address:
www-cache.usyd.edu.au , Port = 8080
(d) WINDOWS XP USERS:: You must use the manual proxy settings for your Web Browser(s). For Windows users, this setting is derived from the:
Start Menu >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Internet Options >> Connections >> Local Area Network Settings
Tick the Proxy Server box, and add for the
Address = www-cache.usyd.edu.au , Port = 8080
Also, tick the "Bypass Local Addresses" box. Click OK to save changes.
