The following instructions are for aiding you to sFTP to your Unix Homes Folder from off-campus, or from our ARCH PC Labs:

* Please note, as of this semester (March 2008), FTP is not our default protocol for file transfer, if you use it, FTP might not work correctly, instead use SFTP (secure FTP).

* WINDOWS USERS (with 3rd party sFTP client) - To access your Unix Homes Folder (Smbhost) and also the (Webhost) via SFTP, do the following:

  1. Load up an SFTP client program on your system.

    You can get shareware/freeware copies of FTP clients to install on your own computer from the Internet, such as CuteFTP, WS_FTP, etc.
    We recommend WinSCP ( http://winscp.net/eng/download.php ); it's freeware, and it supports SFTP, as well as FTP.

  2. Put the following details into the SFTP client:

    Host: webhost.arch.usyd.edu.au   (nb. legacy Host: ftp.arch.usyd.edu.au will still work!)( use for Webhost - uploading webpages)

    or

    Host: pompidou.arch.usyd.edu.au   ( use for Smbhost - Unix Homes Folder )

    Username: your username
    Password: your Architecture password
    Protocol: SFTP

    Port: 22

  3. (Leave all other information as default, if you are uncertain of the other Preferences).

  4. Once the SFTP client connects to the server, you will have a new window. The left column typically shows your computer's Local directory, whereas the right column typically shows your Remote directory ( what is also known as your 'Unix Homes Folder' ! ).

  5. Select all the folder or files you wish to upload from the Local directory side, and drag-n-drop them to the Remote directory side. This will immediately start the transfer of the files. ( Likewise, it is typically the same process with most SFTP client GUI software when transferring files from the Remote directory onto your computer's Local directory ).

* Apple OSX USERS (with 3rd party sFTP client):

(Step A) Install the recommended 3rd party sFTP client freeware program called "CyberDuck".

Download it from http://cyberduck.ch/

Then follow the software instructions to install it onto your System.

Please get familiarised with using the Cyberduck interface from its Help menu and also from the Software's website guides.

(Step B) Type in the following details into the FTP client software interface:

Server = webhost.arch.usyd.edu.au (nb. legacy Host: ftp.arch.usyd.edu.au will still work!)( use for Webhost - uploading webpages)

or
Server = pompidou.arch.usyd.edu.au ( use for Smbhost - Unix Homes Folder )

Protocol = SFTP (secure File Transfer Protocol)

DOMAIN: ARCH

Port: 22

Username = username (make sure you add the prefix ARCH\ before your username)

Password = (your architecture password).
