| 2007-10-30 | Some computers are not getting an IP address. Try refreshing your IP by (on a PC) going to the start menu, selecting "Run" and typing "ipconfig /release", then selecting "Run" again and typing "ipconfig /renew".
On a Mac, open the network control panel, select ethernet and click "configure", then click "renew DHCP lease".
Do this several times, and if that does not fix your problem (you should get an address starting with 129 or 172 if it works) then contact us. . |
| 2007-10-16 | There were some network issues slowing down many network services over the last couple of days. I believe I have now fixed this problem, and network services such as your Z: drive, file shares and intranet should now be fast. |

| 2007-10-15 | I had to bring down a server as it was performing badly. This would have affected unix home directories, the faculty helpdesk page, sftp and user home web pages. The server was restarted between 5:20 and 5:40pm. All services are up now. |
| 2007-10-12 | The latest version of Bentley Microstation (V8 XM) for Windows is now installed on the 2 back rows of the Digital Media lab on level 2. That is, LABDM214, 215, 216, 217, 218, 219 * Older versions of Microstation (V8 non-XM editions ) will not run any longer as their networked license has expired. - ICT |
| 2007-10-10 | We have Microstation licenses. We need to update our license server though. We will have the licenses ready by the end of this week unless there are mitigating circumstances.
Could any students needing the license please contact Julian, as he needs to know what comptuer you are using the unlicensed version of Microstation on. |
| 2007-10-03 | Login change in Mac lab: As an experiment aimed at addressing performance issues in the mac lab, I have enabled local home directories in the mac lab. This means that when you log in, the home directory you see will be on the local disk. If yo want to access your network home in the mac lab, select Go=>Connect to server from the finder menu and type smb://smbhost.arch.usyd.edu.au/homes |
| 2007-09-29 | There was a network problem on the architecture local area network starting at around noon Saturday. The problem has now been fixed as of 6pm, and all facilities should be available. Please email helpdesk@arch.usyd.edu.au if there are any further issues. |
| 2007-09-21 | inDesign problems in the labs. Application hangs on startup. I have fixed this in the MacLab on most machines (all but 2). May still be a problem on the PCs. Julian is fixing this. |
| 2007-09-13 | MAYA licensing Notice: we only have 40 concurrent licenses for MAYA in the labs. When there is a MAYA tutorial(s) on, all licenses are normally used up and anyone not in the class will likely NOT be able to load up Maya on their own workstation. |

1) PHYSICALLY disconnect the network cable from the machine
2) then put in the USB device. Copy the files onto the DATA drive
3) Connect the network cable back to the machine |
| 2007-05-24 | I will be installing a security patch on two of our servers on Friday. As a result I will have to bring services down for 30 minutes or so. Please make sure you have logged out of your computer at 5pm Friday. This will affect most services including personal and non CMS web sites, and home directories. Email will be unaffected by this. |

The Maclab is set up so that when you log on to a computer, your desktop and environment is that stored on your network home. This means that your log in will look the same regardless of the computer you log on to. It also means that the desktop is a network share.
So, if you work off the desktop, you will be using a network share. If you are streaming video or audio, it will slow to a point where it is unusable. |

| 2007-01-02 | Due to an issue following a recent update, Macintosh users who are accessing the University’s Exchange email service using Entourage may be unable to connect to their email accounts. This is a temporary issue, which is scheduled to be resolved in the evening of 02/01/2007. Please use one of the following two interim solutions in the mean time to access your email: 1) Use the University’s MCS Exchange Webmail service to access your email using an internet browsing program (Such as Safari). This will only be necessary until the problem has been fixed, which is scheduled to take place this evening. The webmail can be accessed at the following page using your UniKey: https://www.mcws.usyd.edu.au/exchange 2) Change the settings in Entourage to disable SSL. To do this, please follow these steps: - Open Entourage - Left click on “Entourage” on the Menu bar and select “Account Settings” - Double click on your Exchange email account - Untick the box labled “This DAV service requires a secure connection (SSL)” - Click OK and close the Account Settings window - Close and restart Entourage Please note that this process will need to be reversed when SSL is re-enabled on the MCS server, which is scheduled for this evening. | 2006-11-02 | For anyone having issues with using the Core-FTP SFTP client software whilst accessing your Unix Homes Folder from our Windows labs or personal computers, please try another freeware SFTP client called 'WinSCP' instead. WinSCP seems to be more compatible with our SFTP Server. Often, we have had reports of users seeing their files wrongly displayed as 0 bytes on their Unix Homes Folder etc, and having general difficulties downloading and uploading. WinSCP can be downloaded from:

If you can find another free SFTP client that may be better tailored for you, please try it out to ensure it does not show any compatibility issues with our SFTP server. |
